Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation increases the volume of the breasts with the placement of implants. Clinically known as an augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation uses either saline or silicone implants. The implants are placed either behind the breast tissue or the chest muscle, and add size, shape, and fullness to the breasts. Ideal candidates are women with naturally small or asymmetrical breasts, or women whose breasts have lost fullness due to aging or pregnancy. The incisions for a breast augmentation surgery can be made in several different positions – including around the nipple, underneath the breast crease, or in the armpit. The type of implant, placement of the implant, and placement of the incision depends greatly on the recommendation of the surgeon and the individual patient’s needs, goals, and body type.
Breast Lift
Breast lift surgery repositions the breasts higher on the chest; this makes the bust line look perkier and more youthful. The nipples will also be repositioned. There are several breast lift (or mastopexy) techniques that the plastic surgeon may use. The standard breast lift surgery involves an incision along the underside of the breast and along the breast crease. The doughnut technique involves an incision around the edge of the nipple. The laser bra lift takes excess breast tissue and creates a support system, resembling a bra, beneath the breast.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction decreases the volume of large, heavy breasts that are burdensome to the patient. If breasts are causing back pain or posture problems, they can be surgically reduced and sculpted into a better size and proportion. Also known as a reduction mammoplasty, breast reduction removes excess fat, tissue, and skin. In certain cases, the excess fat is removed from the breast through liposuction treatment. The incisions for a breast reduction are made either around the areola, in a keyhole shape around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, or in an inverted T or anchor-shape. The nipples and areolas may be removed to a position higher on the chest, and the size of the areola may be reduced by excising skin around the perimeter.
